十多年前，傳奇唱作人Elliott Smith發行了我最喜歡的專輯Either/Or。

許多人聽到他的聲音，是因為電影「心靈捕手」的一曲Miss Misery，讓他在1997年贏得了奧斯卡最佳電影原創歌曲。我第一次聽到他的聲音，便是這張專輯裡的Angeles，短短不到三分鐘的時間，完全被他略帶憂鬱的聲音吸引，簡單的民謠吉他，勾勒出微微的鄉愁情感，馬上衝到櫃檯詢問這是哪張專輯，店員笑著跟我說「Elliott Smith，很棒吧。」

我完全沒有想到Either/Or這張專輯會在我的CD隨身聽裡面停留這麼久。每次聽到他的嗓音，都會有濃密的哀愁，化不開剪不掉的哽咽。我買了他所有的專輯，最喜歡的還是Either/Or，動人的力量永遠都不隨著時間的流轉消逝，反而更加堅定。Damien Rice無法擁有這樣的能量，雖然他的第一張專輯O我也讓它滯留在我的音響裡很久，對我來說卻還是有點過於矯飾，少了單純的力道，雖然也是張好專輯。

媽媽是小學音樂老師，父母離異之後Elliott Smith跟隨母親來從內布拉斯基到德州，童年的生活並不愉快，繼父尤其讓他痛苦，也因此有不少歌詞都是在隱涉童年的不快樂遭遇。九歲開始彈鋼琴，十歲開始彈吉他，Elliott Smith是個早熟的孩子，高中大學玩團時也是核心人物。他的一生充滿了不快樂，全部都寫在他的歌之中，最後的結束生命也似乎不意外，而他最愛的Bob Dylan到現在仍然在唱著Like a Rolling Stone，我們卻再也聽不到他的Rose Parade。如此冷靜的唱出極為哀傷的故事，就像根本和自己沒有關係一樣，漠然的面對世界的一切，就是像這樣的人，才會唱出這樣的歌。網路上關於他的介紹很多，American Beauty（美國心玫瑰情）和The Royal Tenenbaums（天才一族）也不約而同的用了他的歌。

從第一曲Speed Trails開始，就註定隨著歌聲起伏。如果你一直以來都還沒有買過他的專輯，相信從Either/Or開始，也會對Elliott Smith產生莫大的情感。
